Top Five Things To Do In Cornwall this Spring

Spring is an incredible season to visit Cornwall and experience the great outdoors. You’ll be treated to mild temperatures and bright sunny days, without the summer crowds. So what are you waiting for? Get out and explore our top five spring activities.

1. Enjoy a coastal escapade by Super Sup

Super Sup Coasteering in Newquay is a hybrid adventure, and the most fun you can have on land and water combined. The Super Sup is a giant raft-like paddle board that can carry up to ten intrepid explorers on an epic adventure on the open ocean, into caves and around the Newquay coastline. The coasteer is an adrenaline rush; it involves climbing up rocks, swimming, traversing and jumping from height.

You’ll spot amazing marine life, swim through natural rapids, sluices and whirlpools and push your boundaries with adrenaline-fuelled cliff jumps. This is a family friendly activity and Super Sup has alternative options and routes for all comfort levels. It’s a no-pressure tour full of laughs and squeals, and it’s guaranteed to make you feel alive.

2. Enjoy an ocean dip

Sea swimming has undergone a major rebrand and surged in popularity over the last few years. Community groups such as the Blue Tits, She Swims, and The Blue Balls (Cornwall’s first male cold water swimming group) are popping up all over the county, so there is no shortage of people to swim with. Even on the coldest, darkest, days of the year, people gather in just their swimmers, to collectively dip.

The benefits of cold water swimming are well documented, such as reducing stress and anxiety, boosting your immune system and circulation, and enhancing your mood and mental clarity. Sea swimming is open to all as it’s free and requires no equipment. It’s also an effective way of connecting with local ocean lovers, exploring the Cornish coastline and experiencing the natural elements.

Remember – stay safe and swim with a buddy, or better still swim with a local swimming group.

3. Catch a wave

A trip to Cornwall is not complete without donning a wetsuit and experiencing the world famous Newquay surf. And lucky for us at The Alverton, we’re just a stone’s throw from the action. Hiring surfing equipment is an option if you’re experienced, but if not, a surf lesson is 100% the best way to have fun, stay safe and get to grips with the fundamentals of surfing quickly.

Learn the correct technique from the start and you’ll be on your feet and catching waves in no time. With consistent swell year round, beginner-friendly waves and glorious sandy beaches, there is no better place to learn to surf than Newquay. The world famous Fistral Beach is the perfect place for your surfing adventure to begin.

Learn to surf.

4. Complete a modern day pilgrimage

Discover this brand new pilgrimage route designed for hiking enthusiasts and families alike: The Cornish Celtic Way. It’s a 125 mile walking route from St Germans to St Michael’s Mount, that explores beautiful inland villages and enjoys over 60 miles of the stunning Cornish coast path. This route combines elements of The Saints’ Way and St Michael’s Way, and is an incredible way to traverse and celebrate the variety of the Cornish countryside.

The Cornish Celtic Way can be split into 16 individual walks, or can be completed as a long distance adventure which takes around 10-12 days. Don’t forget to order your Cornish Celtic Way passport in advance so that you can collect your stamps from churches along the route. Great fun for all ages and all fitness levels.

5. Explore the best Cornish Cycle Trails

The largely traffic-free Camel Trail runs 18 miles from Padstow to Wenford Bridge, via Wadebridge and Bodmin, and makes for a brilliant day out on two wheels. It follows the route of an old railway line so is just about the flattest route in Cornwall – ideal for less experienced cyclists and family groups. The Camel Trail will take you through beautiful areas of tidal river estuary, moorland and woodland and is popular amongst cyclists, walkers, joggers and horse-riders. If you don’t have your own bike you can hire one here.

Another brilliant cycling route is the Cornish Coast to Coast, this is a bit shorter at 11 miles, but spans the county from the tranquil river estuary village of Devoran across to the dramatic north coast port of Portreath.
