The Alverton Team’s Favourite Christmas Films

Looking for the perfect Christmas films to get you in the festive spirit? Have a look at The Alverton's favourite movies below.

Love Actually (2003)

A Christmas-themed romantic comedy, Love Actually features eight couples in London all interlinked with different stories about their relationships. As the countdown to Christmas nears, which ones will stand the test of time? And what new relationships will blossom before Christmas Day? This movie is a firm favourite of our Head of Housekeeping, Tori: “When December hits, Love Actually gets played!”

Home Alone (1990)

Our General Manager Paul’s best-loved film. When nine year old Kevin is mistakenly left behind when his family flies to Paris for their Christmas holiday, he must protect the house from two scheming burglars. “A comedy film that’s sure to put the jolly in your Christmas spirit!”

Elf (2003)

Buddy, a human, is raised amongst elves at the North Pole under the watchful eye of Santa Claus. When he discovers that he is not an elf, he travels to New York to search for his biological father, where the true meaning of Christmas unfolds. Marketing Manager Abby and Reservationist Lisa say: “It’s not Christmas until we watch Elf – such a comedy classic!”

Miracle on 34th Street (1994)

Six year old Susan is skeptical of the Christmas myth surrounding Santa Claus, a trait she perhaps learned from her mother. When tasked with hiring the Santa who will pose with kids at Macy’s department store, Dorey enlists a man with the curious name of Kris Kringle, who claims to be Santa himself. “It’s just such a wonderful story – you can’t beat it!” says Guest Relations Manager Larissa.

It’s a Wonderful Life (1946)

George Bailey has so many problems he is thinking about ending it all – just when Christmas comes around! As the angels discuss George, we see his life in flashback. As he is about to jump from a bridge, he ends up rescuing his guardian angel instead – Clarence – who then shows George what his town would have looked like if it hadn’t been for all his good deeds over the years. Our Weddings and Events Manager Clare adores this film, claiming “it’s a classic film that everyone needs to watch at least once in their life.”

The Holiday (2006)

Two women from across the world decide to swap homes for the Christmas holidays to get away from their relationship issues. However, their lives soon change unexpectedly when they meet two local men who show off their hometowns. Head Receptionist Saffion states: “I have to watch this film every year, otherwise it doesn’t feel like Christmas to me.”

Nightmare before Christmas (1993)

Jack Skellington, a being from Halloween Town, finds Christmas Town and is instantly enchanted. The situation becomes riveting when his obsession with Christmas leads him to abduct Santa Claus. A controversial movie for those that don’t know whether it sits as a Halloween or Christmas movie, our Bar Manager Simon still chooses this as his Christmas favourite for “the beautiful animations and amazing music, which creates a great atmosphere – Tim Burton is a pure genius.”

The Polar Express (2004)

A young boy boards a train and embarks on an extraordinary journey to the North Pole to meet Santa Claus. His life takes a turn after he encounters special people that make his journey memorable. A truly magical computer-animated adventure film that’s sure to bring the festive spirit alive, this movie is our Head Chef Ollie’s favourite. “A stunning storyline and exceptional computer animation.”
