Cornwall Lover’s Ultimate Cornish Bucket List

Usually found capturing the county at its most beautiful, Lowenna Pascoe aka Cornwall Lover on Instagram, is someone you can rely on to have visited every Cornish location. We catch up with Lowenna to find out what's on her ultimate Cornwall bucket list this year.

Head into the surf

Is a trip to Cornwall complete without giving surfing a go?

You’ll be surprised how many benefits there are to getting in the water, many of which lead to a happier, healthier and more fulfilling life. With Cornwall boasting hundreds of beaches perfect for taking the plunge with a surfboard, it really is a must during your stay. If you’re a beginner there are heaps of local surf schools waiting to take you out on the water and get you standing up on your first try. Check out this guide from Women + Waves beforehand, with plenty of tips on how to prepare yourself before diving in. From packing snacks to warming down post-surf, it’s all in there.

Summer Garden Sessions

And they’re back!

I had the pleasure of going to one of the very first Summer Garden Sessions at The Alverton in Truro. Imagine the sun shining on the most beautiful terrace, spaced-out tables with garden views, some of the best live music in Cornwall playing, BBQ sizzling – and did I mention two cocktails for £10? Hosted most Thursday evenings from 5:30pm throughout the summer, this is one not to be missed. Discover more here.

The Working Boat

Who doesn’t love a little live music whilst sipping on an ice-cold Cornish ale or glass of refreshing Tarquin’s Gin?

Our favourite bar on the water, The Working Boat will be hosting free music evenings throughout Falmouth Week, on 6th – 15th August. Musicians will be announced soon, so keep your eyes peeled on their website. If you want to make a night of it, get your taste buds jumping with their kick-ass menu offering beer battered haddock, the famous Working Boat burger, and their panko grilled halloumi to name a few. See the full menu here.

The Cornish Gin & Drinks Festival

Kicking off the foodie festival season is The Cornish Gin & Drinks Festival in the Great Hall at The Alverton.

An event perfect for gin lovers, running from midday until late 11th September. Guests will get to meet the makers, attend gin masterclasses and sample the very best in Cornish tipples (mine’s a Tarquin’s Gin). Feeling peckish after a few gins? No problem – delicious tasting boards filled with nibbles will also be available. Find out more and buy tickets here.

Wild swimming

If surfing isn’t for you, I highly recommend taking a dip in some more secluded and calmer waters around the coast.

I tried this myself last year on New Year’s Day at Newquay Harbour and haven’t looked back since. The experience of a cold-water shock improves the body’s stress response, increases the levels of dopamine in the body, and is a way for us to build our confidence, resilience, and bravery. You’ll feel amazing for the rest of the day and ready to conquer the world. There are plenty of places around Falmouth for this. Try Gyllyngvase beach or a spot along the Helford River.

Peeky Blinders Murder Mystery Evening

If you’re a fan of the BBC One series Peaky Blinders, then this is an unmissable event for you.

The Alverton are proudly hosting the first ‘Peeky’ Blinders Murder Mystery evening on 13th August. Guests will get to travel back in time to city life in 1919. Back to a time when a family of gangsters ruled the streets in newsboy caps with a razor-sharp edge. Gather the clues and crack the case at the themed murder mystery dinner party.  Starting at 7pm, enjoy a drink on arrival before taking your seat for the main event in The Great Hall. Enjoy a delicious four-course dinner, served with a side of scandal, mystery and murder.
