Win tickets to the Ruby Ball

As we celebrate 40 years of The Alverton, we're asking for your memories at our historic hotel, for the chance to win tickets to our grand Ruby Ball and a night's stay.

40 years of The Alverton

2024 marks 40 years since The Alverton became the hotel we all know and love today. A home away from home, dinner date setting, wedding venue, beloved workplace. However big or small your memory of our oasis on the hill is, we want to hear it.

Share your precious Alverton moments

A hotel is nothing without its beloved guests. As we celebrate the Ruby Anniversary of our historic hotel in Cornwall, we want everyone who has shaped The Alverton into what it is today to be involved.

Whether you entered through the old oak doors forty years ago, or last week – we want to hear how The Alverton has played a part in your life. From fond memories of family holidays, a first-date that was the opening chapter of a love story, the wedding of your dreams, or a job that ignited a passion for a career in hospitality – we’d love to hear your stories.

WIN two tickets to The Alverton’s Ruby Anniversary Ball

On Saturday 7th September, we’ll be throwing a dazzling Ruby Ball in the crown jewel of the hotel – The Great Hall. Guests will be dressed head-to-toe in red, and greeted with a Ruby’s Pearl cocktail and a strawberry and chocolate fountain, followed by a four-course dinner from Executive Chef, Nick Hodges. After dinner, it’s time for drinks and dancing, as we’ll be joined by local favourites Falmouth Soul Sensation to end the night.

We’re giving away two tickets worth £150 to the Ruby Ball, plus an overnight stay for two and breakfast the next morning. To enter, simply send us your treasured Alverton memories from the last 40 years. We’ll choose our favourite photos and stories to display on the night of the ball, and one lucky entrant will be chosen to win our giveaway too!

How to enter

Share your memories by 15th August, by tagging us on Instagram (@thealvertonhotel), Facebook (@alvertonhotel), or by emailing us with the subject line ‘Alverton Ruby Memories’ to [email protected].

T&Cs apply. Entrants must be 18 or over. The closing date for submitting your memories is at midnight on 15th August 2024. By entering our competition, you give permission for The Alverton Hotel to use your photos and stories across The Alverton’s online and printed marketing materials for promotional purposes, unless otherwise stated. Please provide names to be published where possible (unless you wish to remain anonymous).

Where it all began

Aside from being a beautiful and relaxing space for visitors, our historic hotel in Cornwall has quite the colourful past. The now grade II listed building has resided on its hillside setting, elevated from the Cornish capital, since 1830.

Starting out as a fairly extravagant family home for the time, the east wing existed as The Alverton Manor – built for William Tweedy – the head of a well-respected family within Truro. After the passing of Mr Tweedy in 1859, the home was bounced around between The Bank of Cornwall and widower Mrs Jane Tweedy, who eventually sold the thirteen bedroom estate to Mr Pascoe for the grand sum of £6200!

Over the two years Mr Pascoe owned the property, he added on what we now call The Library. However, in 1883 the manor was acquired by a very different kind of family. The Order of the Epiphany, a religious group of initially five Anglican nuns from London moved in, thus The Alverton became a convent.

The Order grew rapidly and were responsible for building a chapel, now known to us as The Great Hall.

Convent to Cornish hotel

This brings us to 1984 – 40 years ago, when the nuns moved onto a more suitably sized residence. The Alverton’s country house charm, peaceful setting, and convenient transport links made it the perfect spot for a hotel. In 2012, we finally purchased The Alverton from the previous owners – and turned it into the four silver star hotel it is today.

During our time at The Alverton we’ve been the backdrop to everything from weddings to birthdays and baby showers to graduations, not to mention those all important family get togethers that stay in the heart and are passed down through the generations. We can’t wait to hear your stories.
