Top Ten Winter Dog Walks in Cornwall

Wrap up warm and embrace our top winter dog walks in Cornwall. With dog bans lifted on most beaches, and the county being quieter this time of year, take advantage of late morning sunrises and footprint-free sand.

Trelissick

Woodland trails, idyllic estuary vistas, winding garden paths, and acres of rolling, grassy hills. National Trust Trelissick is a fantastic dog-friendly spot for a wintery walk.

Whether you’re out for a quick run around and some fresh air, or want to take your time and tire your dog out for the day with an invigorating walk, this location is much-loved by pups and their humans alike. Visit Crofters Cafe, which welcomes well-behaved pooches, for a bite to eat or a hot drink.

Mawnan Smith to the Ferryboat Inn

The village of Mawnan Smith and The Helford River on the outskirts of Falmouth are the perfect pup-friendly spots for a calming stroll. Take your pick from the pockets of shingled coves along the river, with secluded coves and stony banks that lead to the cool, clear waters.

Brave a dip at this popular sea swim spot, or walk along the winding coastal path, ending at the Ferryboat Inn. The pub overlooking the water is renowned for being incredibly dog-friendly, the paw-fect pitstop for a warming drink or some pub grub.

Idless Woods

Pull on your wellies and prepare for some muddy paws at Idless Woods. A forest of ancient beeches, larches, and eucalyptus trees, navigate your way through nature with a handful of off-road trails and tracks to follow.

You and your dog might not be the only ones roaming the wooded area. Keep your eyes peeled for the local wildlife, including roe deer, otters, and badgers. Just a 10 minute drive from The Alverton, this is one of our personal favourite winter dog walks in Cornwall.

Holywell Bay

Is there anything more joyful than watching your pooch’s eyes light up and tail wag furiously as you pull up at a sandy stretch of beach? Let your dog run wild across the shores and dunes at Holywell Bay.

Starting and ending at the Holywell National Trust car park, this circular walk is a short and sweet one mile stroll that takes in sweeping ocean views along the rugged North Cornish coastline. Dog-friendly all year round, get this spot added to your list of regular walking routes.

The Lizard Point

The most southerly peninsula in the UK belongs to Cornwall, and happens to be a dog-walker’s paradise. Come rain or shine, the coastal paths in this area offer outstanding views across The Atlantic and beyond. Make your starting point The Lizard village, which acts as the centre of a bicycle wheel, with pathways like spokes leading outwards to the ocean.

Breathe in the sea salt air as you pass landmarks like The Lizard lighthouse, Church Cove, and the old Lizard lifeboat station. Be sure to pause for a break at the UK’s most southerly cafe for a cream tea or a hot chocolate with your canine bestie.

Malpas to St Clements

One of our favourite winter dog walks in Cornwall sits right on our doorstep. Just a short walk from The Alverton, head along Truro River, past Sunny Corner towards the picturesque village of Malpas. With panoramic views across the estuary, this walk is the perfect blend of coastal meets countryside.

For a longer walk, head across rolling fields and grassy hills, as you circle the confluence of the Truro and Tresillian Rivers. Be sure to admire the ancient parish church of St Clements, that has stood proudly since as early as 1265.

Cardinham Woods

Let your furry friends off the leash to explore the forest floors of Cardinham Woods. Make paw prints along the winding trails, lined with a diverse array of towering trees and greenery. Located in Bodmin, choose your route, from a leisurely stroll, to a more advanced, hilly trek perfect for more energetic pooches.

Be sure to stop by Woods Cafe during your visit to Cardinham, a dog-friendly cafe located in the heart of the woods.

Perranporth Beach

One of the most popular beaches on the North Cornish coast, Perranporth is a great stretch of sand to let your four-legged friends roam wild and free. An amalgamation of rock pools, caves, sand, and surf, this seaside town is the perfect spot for a day out with your dog.

Perranporth Beach is also home to the UK’s only live music bar on the beach – The Watering Hole. Cosy up with a hot chocolate on a winter’s day, or a pint of Cornish ale, at the popular beach bar.

Coosebean Woods

Truro’s best-kept secret, Coosebean Woods is an enchanting oasis on the outskirts of our great little city. The nature trail directs you around the River Kenwyn, and is a wonderful spot for getting outside and amongst nature with your dog.
