Making Cornish Memories With Lowenna Pascoe

Lowenna Pascoe aka Cornwall Lover on Instagram is often found unearthing Cornwall’s hidden corners or celebrating our Cornish culture. Here she gives us her top ten things to do in Cornwall, all within easy reach from The Alverton...

Get Lost in Trebah Gardens

Whether you’re after golden, crisp and crunchy leaves or a bright and colourful spectacle, Trebah Garden is fantastic for a visit any time of year. Meander through hidden pathways and walk under the large green canopies where you’ll soon be greeted by a private entrance leading you to a secret beach. Be sure to grab an ice cream from the beach shop – my go to flavour is the Cornish Fudge.

Catch a Sunset at Perranporth

Take a front row seat at Perranporth beach to one of Cornwall’s famous fiery sunsets. I like to head to Alcatraz for a cheeky cocktail or find a quiet dune to perch on whilst I watch the world go by. There are multiple Pay & Display car parks around the village.

Discover Wheal Coates

If you’re like me and have a secret crush on Captain Ross Poldark, or just fancy learning about Cornwall’s mining heritage, then this is the spot for you. Park at the National Trust Chapel Porth car park and jump on the South West Coast Path until you reach the picture-perfect mine.

Drink Cider at Healeys Cornish Cyder Farm

It would be absurd to visit Cornwall and not enjoy a local afternoon tipple. Mid-way between Newquay and Truro you’ll find this fantastic award-winning Cyder Farm and home to my favourite – Rattler Cyder. Discover the apple orchard, learn how the cider is made and grab an afternoon tea from the café. Parking is available on site.

Shop Until You Drop in Truro Centre

From large high street favourites to small independent and boutique, Truro has the best range of shops in Cornwall with many hidden down the tiny cobbled streets. When your hands are full of bags, stop off for a bite to eat or evening tipple in one of the many delicious eateries. My favourite – Craftworks Street Kitchen on Lemon Quay.

Enjoy a Walk Around Malpas

For an afternoon away from the hustle and bustle, take a walk along the banks of Truro River in Malpas. Hop on a boat for a day trip to St Mawes or dine at one of my top Truro hang outs – The Heron Inn (Sunday roast highly recommended).

Go Back in Time at Tregothnan

One for the tea lovers, or those that like looking at pretty things! Tregothnan is a grand house full of history with a large private estate just three miles from Truro. It’s home to the first English tea grown in England and has a magnificent garden well worth a walk around. Head here in spring to catch the magnolia tree in full bloom or book a private garden tour with their head gardener.

Eat a Hedgehog Ice-cream at Porth Chapel

If you can eat one of these without licking your lips, then you have some serious skills. Chapel Porth beach is famous for its ‘hedgehog’ ice cream – a waffle cone with a large scoop of vanilla ice cream, topped with a dollop of Cornish clotted cream and rolled in caramelised hazelnuts. Don’t like nuts? They have crumbly flapjack too.

Take a Selfie at Kynance Cove

When people ask me where the number one place is they should go, my answer is always Kynance Cove. Imagine crystal clear Caribbean waters, striking rock formations and grassed headland all in one shot. This place is an Instagrammer’s dream and it must be at the top of your bucket list. Park in the National Trust car park.

Light a Candle at Truro Cathedral

Lastly but by no means least, a visit to Truro Cathedral will be the most magical to do that you will tick off your list. Souring above the surrounding rooftops, you can spot this magnificent building all around the city. Enjoy peace and tranquility as you admire the stunning architecture, stopping off to light a candle in memory of someone special.
