The smell of roasting chestnuts, the twinkle of Christmas street lights and the sound of carols played in cosy shops - Truro is the home of the festive season in Cornwall. From late November and throughout December the city plays host to numerous wonderful Christmas events, and here are our top picks.
Wednesday 22 November
City of Lights is full of festive cheer, heartwarming and uplifting it’s well worth grabbing a hot chocolate and joining the crowds for this annual treat. Watch giant lanterns parade throughout the streets accompanied by performers, musicians and dancers.
Wednesday 22 & 29 November and Wednesday 6, 13 & 20 December
Truro has an abundance of unique shops dotted throughout the city. Lovely independent shops are nestled next to bigger national stores so regardless of who you’re buying for you’ll always find them a treat or two in Truro. Stay for late night shopping running every Wednesday from the 22nd November and soak up the festive atmosphere.
Made in Cornwall Market (Wednesday 29 November - Sunday 3 December) and The Winter Gift Fayre (Tuesday 12 - Sunday 17 December)
There’s plenty of opportunity to find a truly special gift in Truro. Made in Cornwall Market showcases local makers and craftspeople who’ll be selling their beautifully made products in time for Christmas. The Winter Gift Fayre is a brand new market featuring quality treats and gorgeous gifts.
Thursday 2, 9, 16 & 23 December
Trelissick Gardens is a National Trust property and is just a short drive from the city centre. Wander round the gardens and house, taking in the breathtaking views of the river, and say hello to the reindeer too.
Tuesday 5 - Sunday 31st December
Any Christmas isn’t complete without a trip to the panto. Full of slapstick and silliness with a hint of heroism and romance it’s a wonderful mix of all things that make a trip to the theatre great. Prepare for plenty of hissing and booing and interval ice cream too.
Sunday 24 December
We’re on the very cusp of Christmas Day and with the cathedral a short walk from the hotel Midnight Mass is a must. If you’re staying with us over Christmas enjoy hot chocolate with all the trimmings when you return back to The Alverton.
