Meet our Pastry Chef, Matt Sargent

Before another day of creating exquisite dishes for our guests and visitors begins, we grab our talented Pastry Chef Matt for a chat.

Meet The Alverton’s Pastry Chef

Born and raised in Cornwall, Matt grew up and studied in Truro, before dabbling in a few different careers. From attempting to become a pilot in the Royal Navy to giving computer games design a go, Matt finally found his calling in life and pursued his passion for food. Fast forward to April 2017 and Matt joined our award-winning restaurant team. We are delighted he chose his career in cookery, and we’re sure you’ll agree if you’ve ever had the pleasure of sampling his dishes.

Out of the kitchen

When he is not cooking up moreish treats in our kitchen, you’ll find family man Matt at home with his wonderful wife Rebecca and amazing daughter Evelyn. Also a keen rugby player, in his spare time he’ll probably be swapping the chef whites for a gum shield and scrum cap to play for Truro and St Agnes.

From rugby scrums to scrumptious desserts and pastry creations, get to know The Alverton’s Pastry Chef a little better.

What inspired you to become a chef?

“I’ve always had a passion for food and cooking. An opportunity came up to train at River Cottage to become a chef and I haven’t looked back since.”

What's your favourite part of the job?

“I really enjoy creating afternoon tea cakes and desserts that I’m proud of that not only look great but taste amazing.”

What’s your favourite Cornish delicacy?

“Duchy Charcuterie. One of my ex rugby coaches set up this award-winning business making all sorts of amazing charcuterie products including my personal favourite – ‘Nduja, a spicy spreadable pork salume.”

What one place in Cornwall would you recommend to guests as a must see?

“Trebah Garden, a beautiful sub-tropical garden set on The Helford River. Great for little ones as there are playgrounds and access to a private beach too!”

Finally, how would you describe Cornwall in five words?

“A walk on a beach.”
