At The Alverton, weddings are as much about the quiet in-between moments as they are about the grand ones. Our Wedding & Events Manager, Clare Buckler, has guided countless couples through their special day with calm confidence, a kind heart, and an unflappable ability to make everything feel effortless. Here, she shares a few things she wishes every couple knew before saying “I do”.

Take time for just the two of you

“The day passes in a beautiful blur,” Clare says. “Couples can be so busy greeting guests that they barely spend a moment together. I always encourage them to sneak away, even briefly, for a precious pause – just the two of you – to take it all in.”

Let the emotions happen

For grooms especially, Clare has one simple piece of advice: don’t hold back. “When you see your partner walking down the aisle, it’s completely normal to feel overwhelmed. Tears are part of the magic – and don’t forget to tell them how wonderful they look.”

A wedding planner’s secret ingredient

Being calm under pressure is essential, but so is kindness. “You need to keep a level head, but also have a laugh with guests to ease nerves,” Clare explains. “We once had a florist mix up the year and no flowers arrived. A quick trip to the shops and we made bouquets ourselves – the bride never had to worry.”

Choose the food you love

When it comes to the menu, Clare believes couples should always follow their hearts — and their appetites. “It’s your wedding meal. Choose your favourite dishes. Guests will remember how personal it felt, and it should be something you truly enjoy.”

Moments that make you smile forever

One unforgettable wedding involved a four-legged ring bearer in a bow tie. “He was meant to trot gracefully down the aisle,” Clare laughs. “Instead, he greeted every guest, then sprinted straight to the bride. He completely stole the show – it was pure joy.”

For the camera-shy

Clare’s advice is simple: invest in a great photographer. “These are memories you’ll look back on for the rest of your lives. Trust your photographer – they know how to capture you naturally.”

Why a hotel wedding feels so special

“One of the biggest advantages is having everything in one place,” Clare says. “No transport worries, no weather stress, and you can stay the night before. At The Alverton, we’ll bring breakfast to your room so the morning feels calm and pampered. And our Great Hall is truly unique – it’s the closest you’ll get to a church without being in one.”

Perhaps the loveliest part? Returning. “Couples can come back for anniversaries, sunny afternoon drinks, or a special overnight stay. We love being part of their story, long after the wedding day.”

The most rewarding part of it all

“Weddings are one of life’s most meaningful milestones,” Clare reflects. “It’s a privilege to turn someone’s dream into reality – and to witness that joy is something I never take for granted.”

"The venue, weather and wedding were amazing. I think everyone had a great time and will remember this wedding for years to come. There are a few people I would like to mention especially. Clare - this is one amazing woman, the patience of a saint. Nothing was too much trouble, I messaged her so many times and she still came back with nothing less than positivity and help. Sally - she has such a beautiful smile which instantly puts you at ease. Full of ideas and attention to detail. Such a warm and caring soul. Like Clare, wants not only the bridal party to have a great day but family and guests as well."
