Simon’s Autumn Wine Recommendations

Simon Willis, Bar Manager and in-house expert in sumptuous sips and tempting tipples at The Alverton, shares his knowledge on the very best pairings ahead of the launch of our new autumn menu.

As we prepare to unveil our delightful new autumn menu later this month, Simon shares some insider tips on pairing exceptional wines with outstanding dishes. Whether it's the zesty freshness of dry, citrus flavours or the smooth sweetness of softer notes, each pairing feels like a match made in heaven.

Valdespino Manzanilla Deliciosa

Dry, fresh and delicate on the palate, this bright, pale, straw-coloured wine provides a sharp, yet gentle bouquet with floral aromas that are reminiscent of chamomile, almonds and dough. Light and smooth, in spite of its dry finish, a light acidity makes for a wonderful freshness and a lingering aftertaste.

Best paired with something like a winter squash filo tartlet, the dry undertones matching those sweeter flavours nicely.

Studio by Miraval

Pale in colour and with fresh citrus aromas and a hint of white flowers, this wine is a true Provence flavour. Strongly influenced by sea spray and the Mediterranean, the saline soil of the French Riviera, surrounded by olive and umbrella pines, gives it a unique character and an almost iodine finish.

This wine pairs very well with seafood, and is best served chilled in good company…

Camel Valley Brut

Made here in Cornwall, this fresh and fruity fizz is similar to a Champagne in it’s delicate dryness, with English hedgerow scents, citrus character and a touch of sweet honey on the palate.

It makes for a wonderful accompaniment to something like scallops and bacon jam, and is also just perfect for any celebration.

Jean Marc Brocard Chablis

One of my personal favourites, this beautiful French white wine comes with notes of lemon, white peach and yellow fruit, with a lovely tingly finish to it.

A dish like the chicken breast and wild mushroom tortellini would be a match made in heaven for this delectable sip.

La Baume Merlot

Awash with vanilla, blackberry and hedgerow on the nose with a hint of spice which follows all the way through on the palate, this merlot is warm, silky and almost sweet, with a dramatically long finish.

This sweet, fruity glass goes very well with all those rich, autumnal flavours that we expect to see at this time of year.

Quady Elysium Black Muscat

Rich and luscious, expect aromas of rose petals and ripe berries, with flavours of blackberry, raspberry and a touch of chocolate on the tongue, all balanced by a refreshing acidity.

This sweet little tipples would go with the chocolate and peanut butter tarte on the new dessert menu like bread goes with butter.
