Meet The Alverton’s Bar Manager, Alex

Can you tell us a little about your role as Bar Manager and what you enjoy most about it?

As Bar Manager at The Alverton, I ensure that the day-to-day running of the bar is consistently up to a high standard. This includes, but is not limited to, the standard of service, cleanliness of the bar, lounge and terrace, and guest satisfaction.

What I enjoy most about working on the bar is the guest interaction and being able to deliver the perfect cocktail that the guest wants, or recommend a bottle of wine that they will thoroughly enjoy.

You previously worked in The Alverton's restaurant before moving behind the bar. How has that experience shaped the way you approach creating a great guest experience?

I have worked in a few food and beverage roles, including at The Alverton restaurant, which has helped me further develop the service skills I have picked up over the years. I have built on what I have learnt and refined those skills into how I deliver a great guest experience today.

I believe that a great guest experience comes from great communication. Being able to recommend a guest a dish or drink from listening to them is always satisfying, especially when they tell you how much they enjoy it and thank you for the recommendation.

What first sparked your interest in mixology and the world of cocktails?

I became interested in making cocktails as it felt like a natural direction. I have always enjoyed trying and creating new things, and cocktails fit right into that for me. I have met many amazing bartenders over the years, and all of them have had so many different ways of working and creating. Learning new things from those individuals always makes it interesting, and using that knowledge in my making of cocktails is always fun and keeps me wanting to learn and discover more.

Do you have a favourite tipple on the new menu, and what makes it stand out for you?

On our new cocktail menu for this summer, I quite enjoy the Cornish Passion. It is a twist on the classic Passionfruit Martini, made with Connie Glaze Vodka, which is a very tasty product from Cornwall. It is a sweet, fruit cocktail that is very enjoyable and refreshing, especially when the sun is out.

Cornwall has some fantastic local producers. Are there any local spirits or ingredients you particularly enjoy working with?

As mentioned previously, I enjoy working with the Connie Glaze Vodka products and also the Tarquin’s line of Gins. They both have a fantastic range of products, and the versatility of those products allows for myself and the team to create a wide range of cocktails as a result.

The bar can be one of the liveliest parts of the hotel. What do you enjoy most about the atmosphere at The Alverton?

I enjoy how lively it can be because you get to meet such a variety of lovely and interesting people. I love being able to talk to guests when they are having a relaxed drink about anything, from what they’ve been up to for the day, to wine and cocktails, or even where they have come from and why they have chosen to visit and stay with us.
