Meet Jen, The Alverton’s Night Porter

At The Alverton, we're fortunate to have a team of dedicated individuals who make our guests' experiences unforgettable. One of the longest-serving members of our team is Jen, our Night Porter, who has been with us for over two decades. We sat down with her to find out more about her journey, her day-to-day role, and her love for Cornwall.

What’s your favourite thing about working at The Alverton?

One of my favourite things about being a Night Porter is that I get to see all the staff at 10 pm, and I also work on my own, which gives me a bit of peace. It’s like a 50/50 balance – I enjoy the social aspect of my job but also appreciate the quiet time alone. It works perfectly for me.

Where’s your favourite place to visit in Cornwall?

I’m Cornish through and through, so there are so many places I love to visit. One of my favourite spots is Jamaica Inn. The food is fantastic, and I love the history behind it. I also adore that there’s something about the mining history there that really draws me in. It’s a place I often visit with my grandson, which makes it even more special.

Why The Alverton?

My journey to The Alverton wasn’t exactly planned. I spotted a job in the West Briton for a 7am to 3pm breakfast shift, Monday to Friday here at The Alverton. I called up at 9am and was invited for an interview at 1pm the same day – Thursday, September 28th. I’ve never looked back.

What does your day-to-day look like?

My day is a mix of interacting with guests and ensuring everything runs smoothly behind the scenes. I spend time talking to guests, which I really enjoy. I also catch up with the reception team and the Duty Manager to see if there’s anything I need to know about, like any issues that might arise. After that, I wait until everyone’s gone for the night and do a walk-around to make sure everything’s secure. It’s a job I truly love because it lets me connect with people while keeping the hotel running smoothly.

How would you describe Cornwall in three words?

If I had to sum up Cornwall in three words, I’d say, “I love it.” I’m Cornish through and through – there’s no place quite like it, and I’m so proud to call it home. I’m grateful for the 20+ years I’ve spent here at The Alverton, and I’m looking forward to many more! It’s been a pleasure to work with such a fantastic team and to be part of this beautiful place.
