There are few things better than stepping out of the Cornish drizzle and into the glow of a roaring fire. Add a pint of something local, a hearty plate of food and a snug corner to settle into. Suddenly the arrival of autumn doesn’t seem quite so bad.

Centuries-old inns tucked beside quiet creeks. Harbour pubs made for watching the weather roll in. Even a particular historic hotel where the fire crackles as evening draws in. Cornwall has cosy corners in abundance. So pull on your boots, wrap up warm and seek out some of our favourite fireside spots this autumn.

Porthleven

The Ship Inn

Perched above Porthleven harbour, The Ship Inn has all the ingredients of a proper Cornish pub. Dating back to the 17th century, this old fisherman’s haunt is filled with flagstone floors, wooden boards, maritime memorabilia and plenty of character.

When the Atlantic is putting on one of its famous autumn displays outside, there are few better places to retreat. Find a spot beside the large open fire, order a Cornish pint and watch the harbour – and whatever the weather might be doing – from the warmth of the pub.

Helston

The Blue Anchor

For a fireside pint with a generous helping of history, make your way to The Blue Anchor on Helston’s Coinagehall Street.

This centuries-old granite brewpub is home to the famous Spingo ales, brewed on the premises. A warren of characterful little rooms, slate floors and historic stone fireplaces adds to its old-world charm. Claim a place in one of the cosy snugs, settle beside the fire and take your time over a pint of something brewed just a few steps away.

Perranuthnoe

Victoria Inn

Just moments from the coast in the pretty village of Perranuthnoe, The Victoria Inn makes a lovely port of call after an autumn walk by the sea.

With the beach nearby and St Michael’s Mount just along the coast, it’s perfectly placed for turning a blustery day outdoors into an excuse for a leisurely pub stop. Head inside, find a cosy corner and settle in for good food, a glass of something warming. This is the kind of unhurried afternoon that autumn was made for.

Restronguet

The Pandora Inn

Hidden away on the edge of Restronguet Creek, The Pandora Inn feels made for days when you want to disappear from the world for a while.

Parts of this historic waterside inn date back to the 13th century. Low beams, flagstone floors and centuries of maritime history are tucked beneath its thatched roof. In summer, everyone makes a beeline for the famous pontoon. Come autumn, we’d rather be inside. Settle beside the fire with a local ale while the boats bob on the creek beyond the windows and let a few hours quietly slip by.

St Mawes

The Rising Sun

At the heart of St Mawes, overlooking its picturesque harbour, The Rising Sun pairs one of Cornwall’s loveliest waterside settings with all the comforts of a traditional village pub.

Take an autumn wander along the waterfront before heading inside to warm up beside the flickering log fire. Enjoy views stretching across the water and the Roseland Peninsula beyond. An inviting place to stop for anything from a morning coffee to a long lunch or an early evening drink as the light begins to fade.

Helford Passage

The Ferryboat Inn

Down beside the water at Helford Passage, The Ferryboat Inn occupies one of those Cornish locations that feels special whatever the season.

The Helford River takes on a quieter beauty in autumn. Think wooded banks, winding footpaths and peaceful water replacing the bustle of summer. After a walk along the river, make for the inn. Settle into a cosy spot and linger over a pint or a comforting pub lunch while taking in the views across the Helford.

Truro

The Alverton

Come and take a seat in the bar…

And finally, there’s no need to venture far at all to find one of our favourite fireside corners.

Here at The Alverton, autumn means golden leaves across the gardens. Darker evenings drawing in. A roaring log fire crackling away in the bar. Hidden away on the hill above Truro, our historic Grade II* listed hotel feels wonderfully removed from the city beyond its gates. And yet, it’s only a short stroll from the centre.

Sink into an armchair beside the fire and order a hot tipple, a glass of red or one of our Cornish folklore-inspired cocktails. Stay for dinner, linger over afternoon tea, enjoy a three-course lunch, or make a night of it and retreat upstairs once the last embers begin to fade.

After all, when the Cornish weather turns, we can think of few better places to be.
