Eight ways to cheer up winter in Cornwall

Banish the winter blues, remain positive and stay safe. We're keeping everyone's spirits lifted during winter in Cornwall with fun events and goings on at our hotel on the hill.

Let’s make the most of winter in Cornwall…

2020 has been one for the books. A national lockdown, Zoom quizzes, 10pm curfews, the magic number six, face masks, the two metre rule and happy birthday hand washing are just some of the bizarre ways our lives have changed over the past nine months. Whilst we know these are anxious times, it is more important than ever to try and find the joy and positivity in the things that we can enjoy safely.

We are determined to bring some light to a bleak situation over the winter in Cornwall. So we’ve worked hard to bring you plenty of fun things that you still can do (rather than what you can’t) to guarantee to add some cheer, laughter and happiness to your day. Without further ado, here are some ways to banish those winter blues at The Alverton and our sister hotel The Greenbank

Day drinking is the new 'out out'

Gone are the late nights painting the town red, replaced with Boris’ new 10pm curfew. We’ve got no choice but to embrace the day drinking, and that’s exactly what we’re doing at The Alverton. Get a little boozy at breakfast with our bottomless gin brunches and sip on endless homemade G&Ts. Bottomless brunch is just £25 per person for a two hour session. Cheers to that!

Distract yourself with a murder mystery experience

Escape your everyday stresses and worries with some light-hearted fun at our murder mystery evenings. For Murder on the Nile this winter, head to our sister hotel The Greenbank in Falmouth, which will be transformed to 1950s Egypt.

Fans of Peaky Blinders will want to get 22nd January 2021 in the diary for our ‘Peeky Blinders’ dinner party, in our Great Hall. Fancy dress is strongly advised for both events – the perfect way to immerse yourself in the plot and distract yourself from the daily pandemic drama.

Add some sparkle to your Friday afternoons

Curb the curfew and take your time with an unhurried Friday lunch treat. Our fantastic fizz and chips offer will be running throughout the winter months every Friday from midday – 3pm. For a sparkling start to the weekend, indulge on beer-battered Cornish haddock, hand cut chips and pea puree served with a hearty dollop of tartare sauce and a glass of prosecco for £9.95.

Christmas isn't cancelled

The festivities are going to look a little different this year for obvious reasons. However, we think after an incredibly tough year it is important to hold onto the magic of Christmas, and rest assured seasonal cheer will not go amiss at The Alverton. If ever we needed mince pies, a glittery tree and plenty of mulled wine, it would be now!

Visit our enchanting hotel for an unforgettable Christmas break in the Cornish capital. For holly jolly get togethers of up to six we’ve also got you covered, from yuletide-inspired afternoon teas, to leisurely festive lunches and intimate Christmas evenings. Make the most of the merriments with us. We can’t wait to welcome you.

Escape it all with a Cosy Cornish Retreat

We all need a little break sometimes, and a Cosy Cornish Retreat is the perfect way to press reset and recharge your batteries. Cocooned on the outskirts of the city, our grade II listed hotel is your safe haven away from home. Our rich history, beautiful gardens and exquisite food all makes for an enchanting escape.

The Cosy Cornish Retreat includes rooms for two from just £119 with a hearty Cornish breakfast and two-course dinner in our award-winning restaurant. Treat yourself to a tranquil city break and let The Alverton look after you this winter.

Enjoy a quintessentially British classic

Take your time with a leisurely Cornish afternoon tea in our garden view restaurant. With views across our verdant gardens, graze on delightful finger sandwiches, miniature sweet treats, and of course home baked scones with lashings of jam and Cornish clotted cream. Or tuck into our festive afternoon tea served throughout December.

And as normal rules don’t apply, how about treating yourself to a glass of Champagne? Now that’s our kind of afternoon.

Social distance with al fresco terrace dining

We are so grateful for our little oasis in the city. Squirreled away from the city centre with plenty of outdoor seating on the suntrap terrace, social distancing and fresh air is guaranteed. On a crisp wintery day why not catch up with loved ones or press pause from a busy day to sip coffee, enjoy hearty food from our winter menu or treat yourself to a few tipples?

Treat yourself to a Cornish Winter Getaway

Boats that drift and sweep the waters, gulls that swoop and glide through the clouds, and seaweed-strewn buoys that bob and sway in the Cornish breeze. How does that sound? Escape the daily grind with a Cornish Winter Getaway at our sister hotel, The Greenbank.

Perfectly perched on Falmouth harbour, head to this relaxed hideaway from £99 per night for two people, which includes a moreish breakfast and cream tea to share or two brews in The Working Boat pub. Indulge in a slice of laid-back luxury this winter.
